Dancewear Australia: What to Wear to an Audition

Whether it’s a college dance audition or a company audition, what you wear can affect your comfort, confidence, and focus. Taking great consideration of your dancewear ensures you’re able to dance without a hitch, and allows assessors to judge on the best of your performance. But what are the dos and don’ts of audition dancewear? The team at Mino Dance dives deeper into best practices and tips when choosing what to wear to an audition.

What to Wear in a Dance Audition

Generally, dancers differ in their dance audition outfits to highlight their personality and style -  however, the foundations remain the same. Here are general considerations in choosing a dance audition outfit.

Form-Fitting Clothing in Neutral Colours

The most important factor the dance audition panel will judge is in the dancer’s movement, making it important to wear clothes that showcase alignment and form. You don’t need to wear full regalia - however, dance audition clothes should be tight enough to avoid obscuring any movement. If you want to wear a skirt, keep it short - muh like what you can see in our Charlotte Leotard - to still allow the visibility of your lines. And while colour is allowed, wearing neutral shades will allow the panel to focus on you and your movements, rather than what you are wearing.

Keep It Clean

A simple nylon leotard with flattering cut-out detailing like our Selina Leotard offers flexibility in your movement while highlighting your lines. For hair and makeup, pinned-back and hair-sprayed hair in a bun with light neutral makeup is enough to enhance your look without becoming the primary focus.

Wear Appropriate Dance Shoes

Always ensure you’re wearing appropriate shoes for auditions whether those are ballet slippers, jazz shoes, or pointe shoes. Also, ensure the shoes aren’t new or dead. Comfortable footing allows you to move unhampered and perform at your best. To ensure you’re getting top-quality dance shoes, take a look at our dance shoes collection. Our shoes are made to enhance both your comfort and performance.

Dancewear Audition Tips to Remember

Do Your Research

Each audition differs - so before packing your audition wear, do your due diligence of what or who you’re auditioning for. Read through all the casting details thoroughly. While most briefs won’t specify audition uniforms, some will require a few items such as heels or form-fitting clothing which you can build from.

Apart from the audition brief, you’ll always benefit from looking up the company’s details, show, or creative team to identify what their tendencies are. This will allow you to create a picture of how you would want to appear in the room, and use its visualisation as inspiration to pick your audition outfit.

Do a Test Run

Wear your selected outfit to class or rehearsal first before the audition to see how it feels, especially if you’re wearing new items. This allows you to check how the outfit holds up in movement and against sweat.

Plan for the Unexpected

In any dance situation, it’s better to be over-prepared than be set off course by an outfit malfunction or small stage accident. Packing multiple essentials, including your dancewear, hair products, makeup, shoes, band aids, and towels into your dance bag makes for strong prep work, limiting the influence of factors outside of your actual performance.
